17 Jan 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) International Press Institute. Global journalist network International Press Institute (IPI) calls for authorities in Burundi to release Rwanda-based journalist Floriane Irangabiye, whom Bujumbura-based court Tribunal de Grande Instance de Mukaza sentenced to 10 years in prison on 3 January and fined BF’ 1 million ($480) for “undermining national territorial integrity”;

17 Jan 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. During a meeting with the Chapter 15 commissions and independent offices at State House, President William Ruto claims there was a plot to abduct and kill outgoing Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati;

17 Jan 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) The New Times. Indonesia-headquartered Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) board of trustees announces the appointment of Eliane Ubalijoro as its new chief executive officer;

17 Jan 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The CitizenBank of Tanzania (BoT) (central bank) reports in its Monthly Economic Review (MER) that Tanzania’s coal exports reached record levels in 2022, as Tanzania benefitted from the global energy crisis that led to an increased reliance on coal;

16 Jan 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) Region Week. Ombudsman Aimée Laurentine Kanyana receives the European Union (EU) head of cooperation in Burundi, Antonio Capone, to discuss areas of possible collaboration;

16 Jan 2023 Asmara (Eritrea) The Globe and Mail. Following the end of the two-year conflict in northern Ethiopia, Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki has extended his military influence across the region, allowing him to play a kingmaker role in Ethiopia;

16 Jan 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. United States (US)-headquartered American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee (AEPAC) launches a new platform to engage the one million-strong diaspora community in the US with national dialogue underway in Ethiopia by addressing constitutional reform;

15 Jan 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) All Africa. Rwanda’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Emmanuel Hategeka, attends the launch of a partnership between Rwanda and Dubai (UAE)-based DP World’s B2B e-commerce platform, Dubuy, which is expected to increase Rwanda’s exports of coffee to the UAE and the Gulf region, together with leaders from Dubuy and Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, as well as Rwandan coffee exporters and UAE-based importers;

11 Jan 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) BorkenaFrance-headquartered non-governmental organisation (NGO) Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders seeks urgent action to release four officers of NGO Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRCO) whom Ethiopian police arrested on 5 January while they were investigating the demolition of homes on the outskirts of Addis Ababa;

11 Jan 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Eyewitness NewsWorld Health Organization (WHO) regional director for Africa Dr. Matshidiso Moeti says Uganda was faced with one of the most challenging Ebola outbreaks in the past five years due to the lack of vaccines and therapeutics;
