6 Jan 2026 Kinshasa (DRC) RFI. One month after the United States (US)-brokered peace agreement between DRC and Rwanda, violence in eastern DRC continues, with renewed offensives by M23 rebels and clashes with the Congolese army;

6 Jan 2026 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Sudan Tribute. The African Union (AU), Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) call for an immediate humanitarian truce in Sudan to pave the way for a permanent nationwide ceasefire, stressing unhindered humanitarian access and accountability for violations;

6 Jan 2026 Nairobi (Kenya) ReutersKenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) reports the economy grew 4.9% year-on-year in Q3 2025, up from 4.2% in the same quarter of 2024, driven primarily by a rebound in agriculture and construction, as well as a recovery in mining and quarrying;

6 Jan 2026 Kampala (Uganda) The Citizen. Information, communication, and technology ministry bans live broadcasts of riots and what it calls “unlawful processions” ahead of the 15 January general elections, citing security concerns, as authorities detain hundreds of opposition supporters;

5 Jan 2026 Kinshasa (DRC) Ethiopian Monitor. The DRC partially lifts its suspension on copper and cobalt processing in Lualaba Province after a compliance review found that some operators met regulatory and traceability requirements;

5 Jan 2026 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Addis InsightFrench retail giant Carrefour enters the Ethiopian market through a franchise agreement with MIDROC’s Queens Supermarket, which will rebrand its existing branches in Addis Ababa and expand to new locations under the Carrefour name;

5 Jan 2026 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. The government notes that it is prioritising 2026 as a pivotal year to boost its power generation capacity, focusing on expanding infrastructure like the Olkaria substation to meet rising electricity demand;

5 Jan 2026 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The CitizenBank of Tanzania’s (central bank) monthly economic review shows that Tanzania’s exports grew by 12.7% in 2025, driven by higher commodity prices and strong growth in services, reflecting the resilience of its economy;

5 Jan 2026 Kampala (Uganda) Monitor. A physical confrontation at a Buganda-for-Museveni rally in Lwengo District between Bukoto South MP Twaha Kagabo and former MP Muhammad Muyanja Mbabaali over Kagabo’s independent candidacy in the 15 January election results in chaos;

4 Jan 2026 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. Kenya implements a new tax on remittances from Kenyans working in the United States, marking a shift in how diaspora income flows are treated for revenue purposes;

1 Jan 2026 Kigali (Rwanda) Africa News. Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) accuses Rwanda of killing over 1,500 civilians in eastern DRC since early December, blaming Rwandan-backed M23 rebels for the attacks;

1 Jan 2026 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) BorkenaNational Bank of Ethiopia (central bank) repeals its 2021 directive governing commercial banks’ investment in Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE) bonds and replaces it with a new regulation effective 31 December 2025, without explaining the reason for the change;

31 Dec 2025 Kampala (Uganda) Reuters. Ugandan police detain prominent human rights activist Sarah Bireete amid a broader government crackdown on dissent ahead of the 15 January general election, where President Yoweri Museveni faces opposition leader Bobi Wine;

30 Dec 2025 Djibouti (Djibouti) APA News. Representatives from Djibouti and Somalia meet discuss strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation, as well as concerns over Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland, which both see as a potential threat to peace and Somalia’s territorial integrity;

28 Dec 2025 Kinshasa (DRC) Al Jazeera. The United Kingdom (UK) imposes visa restrictions on the DRC for failing to cooperate with its new migrant return policy, while Angola and Namibia have agreed to increase the repatriation of their nationals;

28 Dec 2025 Asmara (Eritrea) AA. Eritrea calls on the United Nations Security Council to respond firmly to Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, warning that the move could trigger serious regional and global instability;

22 Dec 2025 Djibouti (Djibouti) Dawan Africa. United States (US) recalls US ambassadors from 15 African countries, including Somalia, Ethiopia, and Djibouti, as part of an unusual reorganisation of US diplomatic representation, with no official explanation or timeline for replacements;

19 Dec 2025 Bujumbura (Burundi) Reuters. Authorities report that since the start of December, the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has forced over 84,000 people to flee into Burundi, overwhelming refugee camps and causing food, water, and sanitation crises, including cholera outbreaks;

18 Dec 2025 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily NationLuo Council of Elders in Migori County install President William Ruto as an elder, acknowledging past governments’ neglect of the Nyanza Region’s development;

18 Dec 2025 Kampala (Uganda) Reuters. A finance ministry report indicates that Uganda’s export earnings nearly doubled in October to $1.5 billion from $769.6m in the same month last year, driven by higher revenues from coffee, cocoa, and gold;

16 Dec 2025 Djibouti (Djibouti) Dawan Africa. President Ismail Guelleh receives letters of credence from new ambassadors from Canada, Switzerland, Indonesia, Mexico, and Venezuela, emphasising strengthening bilateral relations in areas such as trade, security, energy, and infrastructure;
