29 Nov 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Anadolu Agency. Authorities confirm widespread flooding has displaced over 89,000 people and killed at least 120, up from the initial toll of 76;

28 Nov 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) AFP. An opposition party official is killed during clashes between supporters of opposition candidate Moise Katumbi and supporters of President Felix Tshisekedi in Bukavu (South Kivu Province);

28 Nov 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) The Africa Report. Ethiopian Capital Market Authority director general Brook Taye says Ethiopia is on track to launch its first stock market in the middle of 2024;

28 Nov 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. Nairobi high court rules that a 1.5% salary levy introduced in June on the salaries of all Kenyan taxpayers is illegal, closing off this funding stream intended to bolster state revenue;

28 Nov 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Engineering News. Tanzania Railways Corporation presents plans for a 1,000-km railway that will connect the Indian Ocean to Lake Nyasa, travelling across regions that produce iron-ore, coal and graphite, including in Mozambique, Zambia and Malawi;

27 Nov 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Reuters. French telecoms firms Orange withdraws from the process to purchase an up to 45% stake in Ethiopia’s state-owned Ethio Telecom stating that the conditions do not allow for rapid deployment of Orange’s strategy;

27 Nov 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Finance ministry says Kenya will start its privatisation drive by selling stakes in 11 state-owned entities, including Kenya Pipeline Company;

27 Nov 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Gas World. Australia’s Noble Helium reports to have finished drilling at Mbelele-2 at the North Rukwa helium project, confirming significant helium increases in multiple zones of interest at the well;

27 Nov 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) Financial Times. United Kingdom’s home secretary, James Cleverly, says that the UK is still committed to its plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda despite a supreme court ruling that the policy is unlawful;

27 Nov 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. President Samia Suluhu Hassan removes deputy constitutional and legal affairs minister Pauline Gekul after Gekul was linked to allegations of violating human rights by assisting in the torture and maltreatment of one of her employees;

27 Nov 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Reuters. Finance ministry confirms Uganda is preparing to borrow $150m from China’s Export Import Bank (Exim) to help expand internet infrastructure;

26 Nov 2023 Djibouti (Djibouti) RFI. Sudan army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan meets with President Ismail Omar Guelleh to discuss the ongoing Sudanese conflict before meeting Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki on a detour when returning to Sudan;

26 Nov 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. State-owned Kenya Power is seeking to transfer power transmission assets valued at $460.52m to the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company in a bid to improve its cash-flow position;

26 Nov 2023 Kampala (Uganda) The Independent. China pledges unconditional support for Uganda’s push for reforms within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC);

25 Nov 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) AP. United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) express concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in eastern DRC, stating that over 3,000 reported human rights violations were recorded in October alone;

24 Nov 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) New Times. President Evariste Ndayishimiye hands over the East African Community (EAC) chairmanship to South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir;

24 Nov 2023 Arta (Djibouti) Middle East Monitor. Hundreds of citizens, including foreign nationals, participate in the African Peace March in solidarity with Palestinians;

24 Nov 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) The East African. United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Monusco) says it has signed a withdrawal plan for its peacekeepers with the government but does not provide a timeline;

24 Nov 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) New Times. Central African Republic (CAR) President Faustin-Archange Touadéra praises relations with Rwanda, stating that they have helped restore peace and security in CAR:

24 Nov 2023 Arusha (Tanzania) The East African. East African Community (EAC) officially admits Somalia as its eighth member, potentially paving the way for Eritrea and Djibouti to be admitted;

23 Nov 2023 Djibouti (Djibouti) Med Africa Times. Djibouti and Saudi Arabia sign several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in fields including animal resources and communication;

23 Nov 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Africanews. M23 rebels claim to have seized Mewso town after days of fighting between the rebel group and the army, raising further security concerns ahead of the 20 December presidential election;

23 Nov 2023 Asmara (Eritrea) Arab News. Eritrean authorities release 38 Yemeni fishermen who formed part of a group of 54 fishermen imprisoned for over a year for allegedly fishing in Eritrean territorial waters;

23 Nov 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) BBC. Local authorities report that more than 50 people have died in the Tigray and Amhara regions from hunger amid drought and an aid freeze by international organisations;

23 Nov 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. Treasury expenditure disclosures indicate Kenya spent $471.82m on interest for outstanding Chinese loans in the first quarter of the 2023/2024 financial year;

23 Nov 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. President William Ruto confirms the government is set to privatise 35 state companies but does not provide details on which ones and when;

23 Nov 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) Reuters. National Bank of Rwanda (central bank) maintains its key lending rate at 7.25% as annual inflation continues to fall. Annual inflation peaked at 21.7% in November 2022 but has since eased to 11.2% in October;

23 Nov 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Daily News. Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) reports to have registered 137 projects worth TSh 5.2 trillion ($2.06 billion) in the first quarter of the 2023/2024 financial year (July to September);

22 Nov 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) The East African. United States national intelligence director Avril Haines says she has secured promises from President Felix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame, to de-escalate tensions in eastern DRC;
