1 Nov 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Japan announces a $500,000 grant to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Tanzania to assist with the influx of asylum seekers from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC);

31 Oct 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) The East African. European Union (EU) announces $106m in aid to help Rwanda combat rising food insecurity;

31 Oct 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) IMF. International Monetary Fund (IMF) reaches a staff-level agreement with authorities on second reviews of Rwanda’s Policy Coordination Instrument and Resilience and Sustainability Facility and agree on a new 14-month Stand-by Credit Facility for $262m;
31 Oct 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Tanzania’s 13 first-tier banks report a 33% increase in profits over the past nine months, indicating a significant upswing in the banking sector’s performance;

30 Oct 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) Energy Capital & Power. African Development Bank (AfDB) provides Burundi with $13.15m to support a water sector and climate resilience building support programme;

30 Oct 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) Arab News. President Evariste Ndayishimiye meets with Saudi Arabia’s foreign affairs minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, who thanks Ndayishimiye for his support for Saudi Arabia to host Expo 2030 and the 2023 FIFA World Cup;

30 Oct 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Reuters. Australia-headquartered AVZ Minerals announces its intention to file an emergency arbitration application seeking injunctive relief against Cominiere, forbidding any transaction related to the disputed Manono lithium mine. China’s Zijiin mining has been granted rights over the northeast tenement of the mine, rights that were previously owned by AVZ Minerals;

30 Oct 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) The East African. Kenya says it will eliminate destination charges for importers from landlocked East African Community (EAC) partners using the Port of Mombasa, resulting in significant savings, in response to increased competition from the Port of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania);

30 Oct 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) The East African. International Finance Corporation provides $2.9 billion in long-term and short-term financing to businesses in Kenya, Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC);

30 Oct 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff commence a visit to Nairobi as Central Bank of Kenya governor Kamau Thugge says they are discussing a possible augmentation of its existing loan programme, which would be the third increase to the loan programme, set at $2.3 billion in 2021;

30 Oct 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrives in Tanzania for a three-day visit alongside a delegation of government officials and investors from 12 large companies;

30 Oct 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Reuters. European Union (EU) says it will invest €60m ($63m) to upgrade one of Uganda’s largest hydropower plants;

29 Oct 2023 Khartoum (Sudan) Bloomberg. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are currently in negotiations for a ceasefire in Jeddah to put an end to months of fighting for control of the nation, with talks aiming to facilitate the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid to the affected areas;

27 Oct 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Ethiopian News Agency. Ethiopian Electricity Power (EEP) says revenue from electricity exports to neighbouring counties, including Djibouti, Kenya and Sudan, reached $21.4m in the first quarter of its current financial year;

26 Oct 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Bloomberg. Prime minister Abiy Ahmed assures neighbouring countries that force will not be used to secure access to a sea port after tensions arose earlier in October when Abiy claimed the landlocked nation has a right to access the Red Sea and in response, Eritrea moved troops closer to the shared border;

26 Oct 2023 Brazzaville (Republic of Congo) Africanews. Ten heads of state including those from Burundi, Kenya and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) attend the Three Basins Summit to discuss protecting forests in Central Africa;

26 Oct 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Agence Française de Développement (AFD) (French development agency) and European Union (EU) will contribute $154m for the construction of the Kakono Hydropower Plant on the Kagera River, which represents about half of the total cost of the project;

26 Oct 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. President Samia Suluhu Hassan and her Zambian counterpart, Hakainde Hichilema, sign eight memoranda of understanding including a cooperation deal for the development of a natural gas export project. The new pipeline will transport liquefied natural gas from Tanzania to Zambia and is part of expansion plans of the Tazama oil pipeline;

26 Oct 2023 Nyala (Sudan) Reuters. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) capture Nyala, the second-largest city in Sudan, from Sudan’s army, which could mark a turning point in the six-month war and comes as the two sides wish to reopen negotiations in Jeddah;

25 Oct 2023 Goma (DRC) The Citizen. Fighting between M23 rebels and armed forces intensifies near Goma, with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reporting that over 200,000 people have been displaced from the region since the beginning of October;

25 Oct 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) Bloomberg. The world’s largest climate fund, South Korea-based Green Climate Fund, pledges to invest $39.1m to help Rwanda tackle climate change through the restoration of the nation’s only remaining montane forest, claiming the project will stabilise vulnerable communities dependent on the country’s natural resources;
