8 Jul 2025 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) BorkenaUnited States (US) President Donald Trump threatens to impose a 10% tariff on BRICS countries, including Ethiopia, accusing the bloc of promoting “anti-American policies”;

8 Jul 2025 Gitega (Burundi) Burundi Times. Banque de la République du Burundi (central bank) is pushing reforms to enable full digital payment interoperability, as it rolls out a national switch for cards, mobile wallets, QR codes, unstructured supplementary service data and offline use;

8 Jul 2025 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily NationMoses Kuria resigns from his role as senior adviser to President William Ruto;

8 Jul 2025 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The CitizenBank of Tanzania (central bank) announces caps on transaction fees to encourage greater use of digital financial services and promote financial inclusion;

8 Jul 2025 Kigali (Rwanda) Kigali Today. At the Rwanda Convention USA 2025 held in Dallas (United States), Rwanda’s largest commercial bank, the Bank of Kigali, urges members of the Rwandan diaspora to invest in Rwanda’s development, aligning with the country’s vision 2050;

7 Jul 2025 Kinshasa (DRC) La Prosperite. Government reaffirms its commitment to fully implementing the recently signed peace agreement with Rwanda, emphasising respect for the country’s interests and territorial integrity;

7 Jul 2025 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. Opposition parties, the All Ethiopian Unity Party, the Amhara Ghionian MovementEnat Party and Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party, raise the alarm over a leaked government document revealing plans to suppress political opponents ahead of the upcoming election;

7 Jul 2025 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. Nairobi experiences widespread protests during the annual Saba Saba demonstrations, leading to shutdowns and police blockades, especially around the central business district and surrounding estates;

7 Jul 2025 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party proposes the creation of an Independent National Bureau of Investigation as part of its 2025–2030 election manifesto;

7 Jul 2025 Kampala (Uganda) Monitor. Finance minister, Matia Kasaija, announces that Uganda’s 2025/2026 national budget includes new tax measures aimed at raising USh 538.6 billion ($142m) in additional revenue;

7 Jul 2025 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Police block major roads and restrict traffic in Nairobi in preparation for annual pro-democracy protests marking the 1990 Saba Saba rally against single-party rule in Kenya;

5 Jul 2025 Gitega (Burundi) Hiiraan. African Union (AU) extends the deployment of Burundian troops in Somalia by six months to support operations against al-Shabaab and aid Somalia’s state-building efforts;

5 Jul 2025 Gitega (Burundi) AFP News. African Union (AU) faces criticism for calling Burundi’s June legislative and local elections credible despite reports of widespread irregularities and voter intimidation;

5 Jul 2025 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. President Samia Suluhu Hassan urges Tanzanians to maintain peace and unity as the country prepares for the 2025 general elections;

5 Jul 2025 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Finance minister Mwigulu Nchemba introduces a mandatory travel insurance policy for all foreign nationals entering the country, effective immediately;

5 Jul 2025 Djibouti (Djibouti) CNN.  United States (US) deports eight migrants from a US military base in Djibouti to South Sudan, despite legal efforts to block the move due to fears they may face torture or death;

4 Jul 2025 Kigali (Rwanda) Mining mx. A United Nations report names Rwanda’s Boss Mining Solution as a key buyer of smuggled minerals from rebel-controlled areas in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), marking the first such accusation since Rwanda-backed M23 insurgents seized major mining zones;

4 Jul 2025 Asmara (Eritrea) Al Jazeera. United Nations Human Rights Council rejects Eritrea’s attempt to terminate the mandate of the special rapporteur investigating its human rights abuses;

4 Jul 2025 Kigali (Rwanda) Al Jazeera. President Paul Kagame welcomes a United States (US)-brokered peace deal with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) but warns that Rwanda would respond if DRC failed to uphold its commitments;

3 Jul 2025 Kinshasa (DRC) Business Day. DRC and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels agree to return to peace talks in Qatar, following the recent signing of the Washington Accord which outlines a 90-day Rwandan troop withdrawal from eastern DRC;

3 Jul 2025 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) (central bank) cuts its benchmark interest rate from 6% to 5.75% to stimulate lending, particularly to farmers and small traders;

3 Jul 2025 Kampala (Uganda) MonitorUganda Railways Corporation announces plans to significantly expand its passenger transport capacity, aiming to move 250,000 passengers per day as part of an ambitious urban mobility strategy;
