5 May 2026 Gitega (Burundi) Burundi Times. Burundi launches a $5.9m initiative with telecommunications provider Office National des Télécommunications (ONATEL) to significantly expand digital infrastructure and mobile connectivity in underserved rural regions;

Kenya’s President William Ruto addresses Tanzania’s Parliament during a state visit to emphasise the deep-rooted interdependence and necessity of cooperation between the two nations, highlighting a commitment to economic integration and setting a firm May deadline to resolve remaining trade barriers, signaling a new era of bilateral unity;

5 May 2026 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Kenya’s President William Ruto details plans for a refinery in Tanga as part of broader bilateral talks on industrialisation;

5 May 2026 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Reuters. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) restores its pre-war legislative council and elects Debretsion Gebremichael as regional president, effectively creating a rival administration in defiance of the peace deal with Ethiopia’s federal government;

4 May 2026 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. An audit by the Ethiopian federal government uncovers a massive corruption scandal involving the misappropriation of approximately 98 billion Ethiopian birr ($853m), which accounts for nearly 5% of the national budget;

4 May 2026 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily NationNandi senator Samson Cherarkey tables a motion to review the retirement benefits and perks of former President Uhuru Kenyatta as political tensions rise ahead of the 2027 elections;

4 May 2026 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Business leaders from Tanzania and Kenya attending the Tanzania-Kenya Investment Forum, held alongside the state visit of Kenya’s President William Ruto, advocate for a unified market to unlock regional economic growth and streamline cross-border trade;
