10 Jan 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) Region Week. National Assembly approves the appointment of 5 new commissioners to the Independent National Human Rights Commission;

10 Jan 2023 Djibouti (Djibouti) Xinhua. The Ethiopia-Djibouti Railway Share Company (EDR) reports earnings of $47.4m in five-months and the transport of 500,000 metric tonnes of cargo;

10 Jan 2023 Djibouti (Djibouti) Business Insider. Government signs a deal with Hong Kong-based aerospace company Hong Kong Aerospace Technology Group to construct a satellite and rocket launching facility;

10 Jan 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Aljazeera. Rwanda says it can no longer offer refuge to people fleeing violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), stoking high political tensions;

10 Jan 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. China’s foreign affairs ministry reaffirms the Chinese government’s commitment to strengthening and maintaining its friendship with Ethiopia in the face of changing international circumstances, noting that China-based businesses has invested billions of dollars in different sectors in Ethiopia including in manufacturing and infrastructure development;

10 Jan 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) The New Times. National Land Authority (NLA) launches an electronic certificate of land registration or ‘e-Title’ to ease time and cost pressures on applicants and the government agency;

10 Jan 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. New permanent secretary for the ministry of finance and planning, Natu El-Maamry Mwamba, is sworn in;

10 Jan 2023 Kampala (Uganda) news24. Health ministry spokesman Emmanuel Ainebyoona says Uganda is expecting to declare an end to an Ebola virus outbreak that emerged in late 2022 and has claimed the lives of at least 56 people;

9 Jan 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) Xinhua. Health director for Bujumbura, Joel Nibigira, confirms the deaths of 2 individuals following a cholera outbreak in Mutimbuzi district (Bujumbura);

9 Jan 2023 Djibouti (Djibouti) ICAN. Djibouti signs the United Nations (UN) Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW);

9 Jan 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) La Prosperite. Defense minister Gilberth Kabanda unveils the country’s new defense policy which will make military service compulsory for all secondary school graduates;

9 Jan 2023 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) BorkenaNational Electoral Board of Ethiopia announces voter registration is underway in 24 voting stations in South Nations Nationalities and People’s Region (SNNPR) after the previous registration was cancelled over a “violation” of registration rules;

9 Jan 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua announces government’s plans to repossess the illicit wealth of senior figures in former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration who masterminded an alleged “state capture”;

9 Jan 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Kampala Sun. Constitutional court declares section 25 of the Computer Misuse Act, 2011 null and void, ruling that it contravenes Article 29 of the constitution which provides for freedom of speech and expression;

8 Jan 2023 Dodoma (Tanzania) SABC. President Samia Suluhu Hassan appoints Emmanuel Tutuba, previously a permanent secretary at the finance ministry, to be governor of the Bank of Tanzania (central bank);

7 Jan 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) Garowe Online. France government-owned development agency Agence Française de Développement (AFD) agrees on a $39.8m loan to the Rwandan government to assist in the development of the drone industry and digital public services;

6 Jan 2023 Asmara (Eritrea) NL Times. Netherlands Public Prosecution Service (PSS) announces the intention to request the extradition of Eritrean national and wanted human trafficker Kidane Zekarias Habtemariam following his arrest in Sudan;

6 Jan 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) KT Press. President Paul Kagame appoints François Xavier Kalinda to the senate to replace Augustin Iyamuremye who resigned citing poor health in December;;

6 Jan 2023 Kampala (Uganda) Zawya. Bank of Uganda (BOU) (central bank) announces a rise in foreign direct investment (FDI) totaling $474.8m in the fourth quarter of 2022;

5 Jan 2023 Kinshasa (DRC) Al Jazeera. M23 rebels miss a deadline to withdraw from the town of Rumangabo (eastern DRC) which hosts a military base;

5 Jan 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) The East AfricanFarah Maalim, member for parliament for Dadaab town denies claims by Somaliland president Muse Bihi that he incited violence in the disputed Las Anod region of self-declared independent region of Somalia;

5 Jan 2023 Nairobi (Kenya) Anadolu Agency. President William Ruto clarifies that the dismissal of George Kinoti, the former head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in September 2022, was due to a rise in enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings;

5 Jan 2023 Kigali (Rwanda) Taarifa. Mozambique defence minister Cristóvão Artur Chume and Mozambique army commander Tiango Alberto Nampele conduct a visit to Cabo delgado, (Mozambique) to meet the Rwanda Security Forces (RSF) joint task force commander, Eugene Nkubito;

5 Jan 2023 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. President Samia Suluhu Hassan dismisses Diwani Athumani Msuya less than 48 hours after he was appointed permanent secretary to the president’s office, replacing him with state house employee Mululi Mahendeka;

5 Jan 2023 Kampala (Uganda) The East African. Police investigate the raid of Lumuli Police Station (Wakiso district) by Ugandan soldiers who allegedly freed fellow service members who had been detained for staging illegal roadblocks;

4 Jan 2023 Bujumbura (Burundi) Business Day. Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari pledges energy assistance to Burundi from national oil company Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPC);
