12 Aug 2025 Kigali (Rwanda) Africa News. Rwanda denies the United Nations (UN) allegations that its defence forces assisted M23 rebels in killing at least 319 civilians in Democratic Republic of Congo’s North Kivu Province in July, calling the claims “false” and lacking evidence;

12 Aug 2025 Kinshasa (DRC) Monitor. United States (US) imposes sanctions on Congolese armed group, Coalition des Patriotes Résistants Congolais–Forces de Frappe (PARECO-FF), and several mining companies involved in the illicit trade of minerals from conflict zones in the DRC;

12 Aug 2025 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) BorkenaNational Bank of Ethiopia (central bank) governor Mamo Mihretu reports that Ethiopia is seeking United States (US) support to combat black market remittances, aiming to channel cross-border money transfers through formal and regulated financial systems;

12 Aug 2025 Nairobi (Kenya) ReutersCentral Bank of Kenya cut its benchmark lending rate by 25 basis points to 9.5%, marking the seventh consecutive reduction, citing room to ease monetary policy further as inflation remains within the target range of 2.5% to 7.5%;

12 Aug 2025 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), plans to hold a major fundraising drive to raise TSh 100 billion ($40m) ahead of the upcoming election campaigns;

12 Aug 2025 Kampala (Uganda) MonitorBank of Uganda (central bank) governor Michael Atingi-Ego emphasises it will maintain its cautious monetary policy stance, stating that the current central bank rate remains appropriate for controlling inflation and supporting economic stability;

12 Aug 2025 Asmara (Eritrea) Shabait. An Eritrean delegation attends the 33rd session of the United Nations Committee in Geneva (Switzerland);

12 Aug 2025 Kigali (Rwanda) Kigali Today. Prime minister Nsengiyumva Justin announces a new five-year development plan, aiming to grow the national economy at an average annual rate of 9.3%;

11 Aug 2025 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) ReutersEthiopian Airlines and the African Development Bank (AfDB) sign a $500m financing deal to develop a new international airport near Bishoftu;

11 Aug 2025 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Vice president, Philip Mpango, directs the police to ramp up online monitoring and cyber patrols ahead of the 29 October general election, working closely with the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority and other agencies to swiftly address any online content that could incite violence or spread misinformation;

11 Aug 2025 Kampala (Uganda) Monitor. Ahead of the 2026 general elections, governance experts warn of a growing trend of militarised electoral processes, where security forces, especially the army, are playing active roles that undermine peaceful political engagement and democratic norms;

11 Aug 2025 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the judiciary is currently handling key legal disputes, including electoral disputes and reform suggestions, that are expected to have a significant impact on the political landscape;

10 Aug 2025 Kampala (Uganda) The East African. Chief of defence forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba meets with South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir to discuss security issues, including clashes between the two countries’ armies at the common border earlier this month;

10 Aug 2025 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Presidential candidates begin submitting their nomination forms as the official nomination period continues, with a deadline set for 27 August;

9 Aug 2025 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. Ruling Prosperity Party accuses Eritrea of continuing to fuel conflict in the Tigray Region and propping up armed groups, including the Fano militia in Ahmara Region and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA);

9 Aug 2025 Nairobi (Kenya) The East African. Trade cabinet secretary Lee Kinyanjui is expected to lead a delegation to the United States (US) next week to restart negotiations on a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA);

8 Aug 2025 Kigali (Rwanda) Al Jazeera. German soccer club Bayern Munich announces it will scale back its ‘Visit Rwanda’ branding amid criticism linking Rwanda to support for the M23 rebels in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), shifting the partnership toward a three-year programme focused on youth football development at an affiliated academy in Kigali;

7 Aug 2025 Kinshasa (DRC) La Prosperite. Government condemns the killing of more than 300 civilians in North Kivu Province last month by M23 rebels despite a ceasefire agreement;

7 Aug 2025 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. President William Ruto and opposition party Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga commit to holding quarterly parliamentary group meetings between their parties, a hint at a potential collation ahead of 2027;

7 Aug 2025 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The CitizenBank of Tanzania (central bank) launches a new initiative aimed at promoting responsible practices within the microfinance sector;

7 Aug 2025 Kampala (Uganda) Monitor. In the first half of 2025, foreign companies dominate trading on the Uganda Securities Exchange, accounting for 43% of activity, compared to 28% by domestic companies and 23% by local individuals;

6 Aug 2025 Gitega (Burundi) News Central. President Évariste Ndayishimiye swears in a new 13-member cabinet dominated by his ruling Conseil National Pour la Défense de la Démocratie – Forces pour la Défense de la Démocratie (CNDD-FDD) party following the disputed June election in which the party won all 100 parliamentary seats;

8 Aug 2025 Kigali (Rwanda) BBC. Rwanda agrees to accept up to 250 migrants from the United States (US), providing them with workforce training, healthcare and accommodation;
