13 May 2026 Kigali (Rwanda) The New Times. Finance minister Yusuf Murangwa is appointed as the new East African Development Bank (EADB) governing council chairperson;

12 May 2026 Kinshasa (DRC) La Prosperite. China donates a batch of medicines and medical equipment, valued at over 144m CDF ($51,000), to the DRC Sino-Congolese Friendship Hospital in Kinshasa as part of its ongoing medical support to the country;

12 May 2026 Nairobi (Kenya) Al Jazeera., France’s President Emmanuel Macron announces a $27 billion investment package focused on energy transition, agriculture and artificial intelligence during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi:

12 May 2026 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. Tanzania and Kenya are intensifying their competition to become the primary hub for oil refining in East Africa as regional energy demands shift, highlighting a broader push for infrastructure dominance within the East African Community (EAC);

12 May 2026 Kampala (Uganda) BBC. President Yoweri Museveni is sworn in for a record seventh consecutive term in Uganda following the disputed January election victory marred by allegations of fraud and a security crackdown;

11 May 2026 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) BorkenaInternational Monetary Fund (IMF) director Kristalina Georgieva praises Ethiopia’s “impressive progress” on its ambitious economic reform programme during a meeting with prime minister Abiy Ahmed;

11 May 2026 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen. The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) partners with fintech platform Mixx to digitise stock trading, a move that has already helped drive digital investment uptake to TSh 7 billion ($2.67m);

11 May 2026 Kampala (Uganda) Monitor. The Bank of Uganda (central bank) reports that diaspora remittances reached $2.5 billion in 2025, with the United States (US) and Saudi Arabia emerging as the primary sources of these financial inflows;

11 May 2026 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Kenya hosts the France-organised Africa Forward Summit, attended by France’s President Emmanuel Macron and 30 African leaders;

10 May 2026 Kinshasa (DRC) Al Jazeera. Cooperative for the Development of the Congo (CODECO) coalition of militia groups kills at least 69 people in Ituri Province following a series of retaliatory attacks against the Hema community;

9 May 2026 Kigali (Rwanda) AP News. The Congo River Alliance, which includes Rwanda-backed M23, accuses the United States (US) of failing as a neutral mediator in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC);

8 May 2026 Gitega (Burundi) Africa News. Commission Electorale Nationale Indépendante (election commission) schedules the next presidential election for 3 May 2027, with incumbent President Evariste Ndayishimiye currently positioned as the one in favour to win;

8 May 2026 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Africa ConfidentialTigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) escalates tensions with the federal government by restoring a rival regional council and rejecting prime minister Abiy Ahmed’s extension of the interim leadership’s term;

7 May 2026 Kinshasa (DRC) BBC. President Félix Tshisekedi indicates he may seek a third term through a referendum if supported by the public, despite current constitutional limits;

7 May 2026 Antananarivo (Madagascar) L’ExpressDubai (United Arab Emirates)-based Emirates announces the resumption of flights to Antananarivo as part of a broader return to 96% of its global network following significant disruptions caused by Middle East tensions and airspace restrictions;

6 May 2026 Asmara (Eritrea) Semafor. The United States (US) is moving to restore ties with Eritrea to secure strategic Red Sea shipping routes as global energy corridors face disruption from an ongoing US-Iran conflict;
