31 May 2022 Djibouti (Djibouti) Arab News. Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority chairman Aboubaker Omar Hadi invites Saudi investors to invest in the international free trade zone, “a large gateway to an African market of about 1.3 billion people, and ready with appropriate infrastructure”;

31 May 2022 Kinshasa (DRC) UNNews. United Nations assistant secretary-general for political affairs and peace operations Martha Pobee tells UN Security Council the recent resurgence of the M23 armed group in eastern DRC constitutes a serious threat to peace, security and stability in the region, and urgent action towards curbing the violence is needed;

31 May 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) Daily Nation. Central Bank of Kenya governor Patrick Njoroge projects Kenya’s economy to grow by 5.7% in 2022, down from 7.5% in 2021;

31 May 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) The East Africa. Kenya and Sierra Leone sign seven bilateral agreements, one on the establishment of a joint commission for cooperation and the others on political and diplomatic consultations, trade and investment, cooperation in wildlife tourism, gender equality and women empowerment, agriculture, and arts and youth affairs;

30 May 2022 Kinshasa (DRC) Business Insider Africa.Worsening relations between DRC and Rwandapushes RwandAir to cancel planned flights to the DRC after Kinshasa announces that the carrier is banned from its airspace;

30 May 2022 Kigali (Rwanda) Africanews. Hotels and guest houses prepare to accommodate asylum-seekers deported from the United Kingdom (UK), with UK saying first deportation flight is expected on 14 June;

30 May 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) Bloomberg. Central Bank of Kenya unexpectedly raises key interest rate by 50 basis points to 7.5% – the first raise in almost seven years – to anchor inflation expectations as concerns about commodity prices build;

30 May 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) FinTech. Nigeria-based fintech company Grey partners with Kenya-based payments company Cellulant to expand availability of its platform into Kenya for the first time, making it easier for locals to accept payment in one of three supported currencies;

30 May 2022 Geita (Tanzania) The East African.Minerals minister Doto Biteko says authorities arrested eight traders in northwestern region of Geitafor smuggling an unspecified amount of gold out of the country;

30 May 2022 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The Citizen.Tanzania Investment Centre puts over 100 projects worth $60 billion up for grabs by prospective investors as it seeks to hasten the pace of transforming the country’s economy in line with its growth aspirations;

29 May 2022 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Mining.com. Canada-headquartered mining giant Barrick Goldsays it will spend $6 for every ounce of gold sold by its two mines in Tanzania on improving healthcare, education, infrastructure and access to potable water in the surrounding communities;

28 May 2022 Djibouti (Djibouti) Anadolu Agency.Djibouti court sentences former budget minister Bodeh Ahmed Robleh and former police chiefAbdillahi Abdi Farah to three years in prison for leaking confidential conversations between the president and military commanders;

28 May 2022 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) IDMC. New report from Switzerland-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre finds conflict and violence triggered over 5.1 million displacements within Ethiopia in 2021 – triple the number reported there in 2020 and the highest figure recorded for any country in a given year;

25 May 2022 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) The Reporter. Lead consultant overseeing liberalisation process says foreign banks seeking to operate in Ethiopia‘s banking sector will be required to do so in partnership with local banks.
