2 Aug 2022 Kigali (Rwanda) The New Times. President Paul Kagame says the newly created Ministry of Public Investments and Privatisation will immediately embark on effective management of public investments but also urgently work towards putting some of them into private hands;

2 Aug 2022 Kigali (Rwanda) The EastAfrican. Rwanda starts massive recruitment of teachers from Zimbabwe to cover a skills gap after the two countries signed an agreement early this year;

2 Aug 2022 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) VoA. The United States (US) and European Union (EU) special envoys for the Horn of Africa call on Ethiopian authorities to restore basic services to the Tigray region in order to encourage peace talks with rebels;

2 Aug 2022 Antananarivo (Madagascar) Bloomberg. Central Bank of Madagascar monetary policy committee raises the benchmark interest rate by 90 basis points to 8.9%, raising borrowing costs for a second consecutive quarter;

2 Aug 2022 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) The EastAfrican. Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema arrives in Tanzania for a two-day state visit to strengthen bilateral ties, key among them joint infrastructure projects;

2 Aug 2022 Mt Elgon (Uganda) The Citizen. The death toll from the floods in Mt Elgon region rises to 23 as more disasters are anticipated following heavy rain;

1 Aug 2022 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Mining Weekly. Scandinavia-based gold exploration and boutique mining company Akobo Minerals reaches an agreement with South Africa-based IW Mining to operate the underground mine at Segele in Ethiopia;

1 Aug 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) Reuters. Communications minister Joe Mucheru says Kenya has no intention of shutting down Facebook after the national cohesion watchdog gave the platform seven days to comply with rules on hate speech or face suspension;

1 Aug 2022 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Mining MX. Canada-based Montero Mining & Exploration files a 90m Canadian dollars ($70m) claim against the Tanzanian government following the cancellation of its licence to dig for rare earths;

30 Jul 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) Bloomberg. Opposition leader Raila Odinga is viewed as the favorite to win the 9 August presidential election as indicated in opinion polls, enjoying a small lead with 46.7% support in the survey, against 44.4% of possible votes for rival deputy president William Ruto;

30 Jul 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) TechCrunch. National Cohesion and Integration Commission, the ethnic cohesion watchdog, directs Facebook to stop the spread of hate speech on its platform within seven days or face suspension;

29 Jul 2022 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. Regional forces in southeast Ethiopia kill more than 150 al Shabaab militiamen during fierce border clashes;

29 Jul 2022 (East Africa) The New Times. East African Business Council publishes its New Index indicating a 11% increase in confidence in the business environment as reported by businesses in East Africa;

28 Jul 2022 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Borkena. State-owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia announces 27.5 billion birr ($530m) in profit during the Ethiopian 2021/22 fiscal year that ended on 7 July;

28 Jul 2022 Nairobi (Kenya) Business Daily. Central Bank of Kenya governor Patrick Njoroge says fintech companies Flutterwave and Chipper Cash are not allowed to offer payment services to merchants in Kenya as they are not registered to operate;

28 Jul 2022 Bujumbura (Burundi) The Citizen. Rights group Burundi Human Rights Initiative says government has been sending its forces and members of the ruling civilian youth party, Imbonerakure, in a clandestine mission to fight Burundian armed opposition groups in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.
